The Southern Sinfonia in a Supporting Role
Larnach - 5 to 12 May, Westpac Mayfair Theatre
"You’ve seen the Castle now come see the Opera."
Professor John Drummond chose Larnach as the subject of his fourth full-length opera because it had all the right ingredients for the genre. The opera is produced by Opera Otago and the Southern Sinfonia will supply the musical support. Professor Drummond will conduct.
The Mikado - 9 to 16 June, Westpac Mayfair Theatre
Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado is produced by the Really Authentic Gilbert and Sullivan Performance Trust in Dunedin. The Southern Sinfonia will supply the musical support.
Gilbert sets his wit against the English way of life in Japanese guise, with a happy intermingling of flirting, an imperial decree that somebody must be executed and the need for punishment to fit the crime.
Swan Lake - 28, 29 & 30 June, Regent Theatre
Nothing compares with Swan Lake - arguably the most loved of all classical ballets. New Zealand's most prolific choreographer, Russell Kerr, joins Royal New Zealand Ballet Artistic Director Gary Harris to restage this enduring masterpiece that stands alone as ballet's most intimate classical experience. The Southern Sinfonia will supply the musical support for the Dunedin performance.
Dream of Gerontius - 8 September, Dunedin Town Hall
The Dream of Gerontius, opus 38, composed by Sir Edward Elgar, is an oratorio based on the poem by Cardinal Henry Newman about a man's journey to death, judgement and beyond. While Elgar gave expression to Roman Catholic philosophy, the work is universally acclaimed for its musical greatness.
This performance is produced by the City of Dunedin Choir, directed by David Burchell, and marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Elgar. The Dunedin performance will also include the Southern Consort of Voices, the St Paul's Cathedral Choir, Helen Medlyn (mezzo soprano) David Hamilton (tenor) and David Griffiths (bass). The Southern Sinfonia will supply the musical support.
Messiah - 11 December, Dunedin Town Hall
Messiah, the oratorio composed by George Frideric Handel in 1741, is his most famous creation and is among the most popular works in the Western choral literature. Messiah does not tell a story in conventional terms and is therefore unlike almost all other baroque oratorios, but it amply demonstrates Handel's considerable abilities as an operatic composer.
This performance of Messiah is produced by the City of Dunedin Choir directed by David Burchell. The Southern Sinfonia will supply the musical support.
